Work begins Wednesday (June 23) on a roundabout at a major downtown Whiteville intersection.
The intersection of Lee, Madison, and Franklin streets will be converted from a lighted crossing to a roundabout over the course of the next five months, according to the N.C. Dept. of Transportation. The city will also be taking advantage of the work to improve stormwater and wastewater infrastructure in the area.
Closures and detours will be frequent with the project, according to a press release from the city.
The current schedule calls for both lanes of Franklin at Madison Street to be closed June 23-July 7. All streets will be open July 8-13. The northbound lane of Lee, north- and southbound Madison, and Southbound Franklin will be closed July 13-Oct. 11.
Detours will be directed down Caldis and Frazier, and all businesses will remain open during the project, the city said.
Roundabouts are used to reduce idling time at intersections. When the project is complete, all traffic will turn right along the traffic circle instead of turning into or delaying traffic.
