The driver of the Jeep Liberty that struck and killed a beloved Crusoe woman has been charged with driving while impaired.
Mary Frances Long, 53, died after her 2023 Nissan Rogue was hit head-on by a Jeep Liberty driven by Charlotte Milligan of Ash, according to the Highway Patrol.
Milligan, 54, was traveling west on N.C. 130 in the Ash community when her vehicle crossed the centerline and struck Long’s SUV. Both vehicles ended up on the shoulder of the eastbound lane. The crash was reported at 10:36 a.m.
Milligan has been charged with driving while impaired, driving while license revoked, and misdemeanor death by vehicle. A booking photo was not immediately available.
Long will be eulogized Monday. She was known as “The Cake Lady” for her baking and decorating skills.
The Highway Patrol said the crash is still under investigation. Milligan is scheduled to appear in court Nov. 23 in Brunswick County.
