Seven unit were heavily damaged in Friday's fire at the Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville.

Developing story   Multiple fire departments are fighting a structure fire at Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville. At one point the fire sent dense black smoke across U.S. 701 and onto Madison Street. Whiteville Fire is being assisted by Lake Waccamaw, Brunswick and other departments. The Whiteville Police and Whiteville Rescue are on scene, along with the city and county fire marshals. This is a developing story.

State Says White Collar Crime Rising

Reported cases of white-collar crime, which includes fraud, embezzlement and extortion, rose between 2020 and 2024, according to a report released today by the NC Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Justice Analysis Center.
