A Chadbourn Police sergeant is recovering from serious injuries sustained while using Stop Sticks on a chase suspect Thursday. Developing story Multiple fire departments are fighting a structure fire at Sawmill Apartments in Whiteville. At one point the fire sent dense black smoke across U.S. 701 and onto Madison Street. Whiteville Fire is being assisted by Lake Waccamaw, Brunswick and other departments. The Whiteville Police and Whiteville Rescue are on scene, along with the city and county fire marshals. Reported cases of white-collar crime, which includes fraud, embezzlement and extortion, rose between 2020 and 2024, according to a report released today by the NC Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Justice Analysis Center.
