December 19, 1928 ~ September 19, 2021 (age 92)
On Sunday, September 19, 2021, Alice Arine White Pope after a full and busy life went to rest in the arms of her Master. She was born in Evergreen, North Carolina, on December 19, 1928, to George White and Joanna Fields White. She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, James Sadler Pope, her brothers, Henry White, who died in infancy, Lacy White, and Horace White, her sons-in-law Eugene White and Earl Skipper.
For a few years following her marriage, she was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom. She took a job as a clerk at the dime store. That was followed by several years at the blue jean factory in Whiteville, then for a period of time at Mrs. Callie Hayes Grocery Store in Hallsboro. She operated her own grocery store until her retirement in 1990. In retirement, she provided home health care. After breaking her leg in October 2020, she has resided in Hallsboro with her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Donald Creech.
Alice was devoted to her family. Family get togethers are legendary as we celebrated birthdays, marriages, holidays, and especially Christmas. Sadly, some of those gatherings marked the passing of loved ones.
Above all, Alice loved the Lord. She was a member of Honey Hill Baptist Church for over 50 years serving as Sunday School Teacher, church secretary, church treasurer, and she sang in the choir. She is fondly remembered for her role as youth director where she planned outings such as cook-outs, trips to the lake, excursions to amusement parks. On Sunday, when she would drive to church, she would stop by the homes of those needing a ride.
Her generosity extended to the entire neighborhood as well. Her store was a gathering place for the community to discuss crops and the weather and get out of the heat or cold. It offered a safe haven for kids waiting to be picked up after school. It was not unusual for some of those young people, who are now middle aged, to give her credit for helping raise them.
Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 22, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Honey Hill Baptist Church, 6140 Honey Hill Rd, Hallsboro, North Carolina. Pastor Aaron Jefford and Rev. Kevin Barbour will officiate. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 21, 2021 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at McKenzie Mortuary, 112 Jefferson St, Whiteville, NC and Wednesday, September 22, 2021 from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM at Honey Hill Baptist Church. Following the service at the church there will be a short graveside service. Interment will be at Flynn Cemetery.
