NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE
In the NHL, The Carolina Hurricanes are sitting in 3rd place amongst the NHL’s Metropolitan Division with a 17-6-1 record. They Beat the Winnipeg Jets last night 4-2 and continue their trip North of the border as they face the Calgary Flames tomorrow night. Puck drops at 9pm. 

There are four games scheduled for tonight in the NHL. In a Nationally televised game, the Dallas Stars will face off against the Las Vegas Golden Knights. This game is on TNT and coverage starts at 10pm. 

NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION
In NBA action. There were three games last night. The Nets beat the Mavericks 102-99. The Knicks won 121-109 in San Antonio and the Celtics lost in Los Angeles 102-117 to the Lakers. 

Tonight, in a rematch from Tuesdays 124-127 OT loss to the 76er’s, the Carolina Hornets look for pay-back. Tip-off is 7pm at the Spectrum Center. 

NCAA
In Tar Heel Basketball action last night, Senior Forward Garrison Brooks led North Carolina against Iowa with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists. The Tar Heels fell to the Hawk Eyes 93-80. Tar Heel Freshman Guard RJ Davis was impressive in the loss scoring 12 points with 2 rebounds and 8 assists. 

North Carolina Tar Heels face North Carolina Central Saturday at 2pm. 

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Sundays Carolina Panthers opponent is the Atlanta Falcons. Both teams are 5-7 as they head into battle at Bank America Stadium with a 1pm kick-off. Panthers have no one listed on this week’s injury list.

This week’s Thursday night game is the Steelers vs. The Vikings on FOX. Bears at Packers, Sunday night on NBC and Rams versus Cardinals Monday night on ESPN. 

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
The MLB lock out that started Thursday continues. This has been Major League Baseball’s first work stoppage since 1994. The strike of 1994 actually cancelled the World Series that year. The main reason for the stoppage is the CBA. The CBA is the Collective Bargaining Agreement. This extensive document is the cornerstone of any professional sports league. It governs everything from team payroll standards to requirements for travel accommodations. No real team activity or preseason games start till February. No concern is urgent unless the lock out continues past January. 

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BASKETBALL

 Last night North Brunswick hosted the South Columbus Stallions. It was a 77-28 lop-sided win for the Scorpions. 

This afternoon West Brunswick travels to South Columbus. The Stallions are looking to bounce back against the Trojans. South Columbus is winless on the season, 0-7. This game has an early 4pm start. 

Tonight, action also includes East Columbus. The Gators welcome Hoggard into the swamp for a 7:30pm tip-off. 

Whiteville is back in action Friday night. The Wolfpack, 2-1, will host the Eagles of East Bladen High School. This game also has a 7:30pm start. The Lady Wolfpack makes their way to New Hanover Thursday. The Whiteville ladies are 3-1 so far this season. The game in New Hanover has a 7pm start time.
