Bad choice for fake name

WPD: Suspect was passed out at gas pump.

Using a false name didn’t work out well for a suspect found passed out at a Whiteville convenience store early Sunday.

Austin Cross, 26, was charged with carrying a concealed weapon, giving false information to an officer, possession of marijuana, and drug paraphernalia, assault on a female, damage to property, and failure to appear. He was held under no bond. Cross listed his address as McLamb Street, Lumberton.

Whiteville Police reported that officers found Cross slumped over in the driver’s seat of a Chevrolet pickup at the Minuteman store around 4:16 a.m. When he was awakened, Cross gave police the name of Dustin Cross, the report said. A records check showed Dustin Cross was wanted on an outstanding warrant, and Cross was taken into custody.

At that point, the report said, Cross admitted he had used a false name, and correctly identified himself. A records check on his true name showed that Cross was also wanted for assault on a female and carrying a concealed weapon.

In the truck, police found a gram of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, two cigar wrappers with a white powdered substance, two cut straws with white powder, a handgun, two magazines, 72 loose rounds, and two open containers of alcohol.
