Opportunities await folks in Columbus County beginning this weekend. Learn a new skill, beautify the landscape, or go hear the gospel. There is so much to see and do in the area.

Northwood Church will be having their Renewal Revival today (Feb. 25) and Saturday  (Feb. 26) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday service will be at 10:30 a.m.. The church is located at 2672 James B. White Highway North in Whiteville. You can also visit their website at www.churchatnorthwood.com.  

Troop 513 and Cub Scout pack 513 spend six hours last weekend cleaning up trails at both the Lake Waccamaw State Park and the dam. Residents and officials in the area are proud of the effort put forth by the youngsters.  

As prices at local grocery stores rise, Southeastern Community College is offering a class for at least one skill for self-sufficiency. Learn all about the care and keeping of chickens in an “at home” setting from March 7-28. Topics include selecting, housing, feeding, and protecting a flock while maximizing egg production. Classes will be held every Monday from 6-8 p.m. Pre-registration is required to take the class. Call 910.788.6350 for more information.  

If you have ever wanted to learn American sign language, now is the time to get that class for free via ZOOM. The event begins on Feb. 28 and includes 14 sessions that will be held every Monday from 6-7 p.m. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning ASL to communicate will the deaf community. Whiteville Parks and Recreation is currently accepting T-Ball sign-ups through March 18. Registration is for children ages 4-6, and fees are $15 for the city and $25 for the county. A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration.  

Lake Waccamaw Gators Dixie Youth Baseball sign-ups will be Saturday, Feb. 26, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. There is a $40 registration fee. Call 910.625.6167 or 910.625.9750 for more. 

A benefit bake sale for Roy Tickle will take place Saturday, Feb. 26, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at San Jose Restaurant and Cantina. Tickle was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center on Jan. 18 due to a stroke. He was recently diagnosed with Covid and pneumonia and remains in ICU.  

He’s the 36-year-old father of 8-year-old Maycee Tickle and a tow truck driver for ACE Towing. It was his daughter’s idea to have a bake sale to raise money for Tickle’s medical expenses.  
 

Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue organization, is building a 56-acre big cat sanctuary located in Fair Bluff. They are in need of volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing, top railing and kickers on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 

All interested volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds, and be comfortable working in various weather conditions. No experience is necessary. Groups are welcomed. To sign up, please contact Rhonda Billeaud at [email protected] or call 910.840.1886. 

The Columbus County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will be having their 85th Annual Meeting and Mini-Business Expo on Tuesday, April 12 at Northwood Church in Whiteville. The social part of the expo will begin at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be at 6 p.m. The cost is $35 for members and $40 for non-members.
