Spring has not quite sprung yet, but if you’re thinking about upping the ante on some education or sports involvement for you or your children, now is the time to do it.  

The Columbus Career and College Academy application period is now open and accepting responses. Please have your children submit the answers to the questions themselves. CCCA is a great place for students to broaden their horizons and earn a 2-year degree by the time they graduate high school. If you have ever wanted to learn American sign language, now is the time to get that class for free via Zoom. The event begins on Feb. 28 and includes 14 sessions that will be held every Monday from 6-7 p.m. It is open to anyone who is interested in learning ASL to communicate with the deaf community. Is your child feeling confused and overwhelmed about schoolwork? Thomas Academy at Lake Waccamaw is offering tutoring on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:45-4 p.m. in English, math, and science. The event is open to middle and high schoolers in the community. To register your child, contact the school’s office at 910.646.2237. 

As prices at grocery stores rise, Southeastern Community College is offering a class for at least one alternative for those interested in self-sufficiency. Learn all about the care and keeping of chickens in an “at home” setting from March 7-28. Topics include selecting, housing, feeding, and protecting a flock while maximizing egg production. Classes will be held every Monday from 6-8 p.m. Pre-registration is required to take the class. Call 910.788.6350 for more information.  

Hallsboro Dixie Youth Baseball registration will be held Saturday, Feb. 19 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Mike Mobley Field at the old Hallsboro Middle School. Sign-ups are for children ages 8-12 years old, and participants cannot be 13 years old before May. 1. For more information, call Melisha Russell at 910.840.3729. 

Whiteville Parks and Recreation is currently accepting T-Ball sign-ups through March 18. Registration is for children ages 4-6, and fees are $15 for the city and $25 for the county. A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration.  

Lake Waccamaw Gators Dixie Youth Baseball sign-ups will be Feb. 19 and 26, from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church. There is a $40 registration fee. Call 910.625.6167 or 910.625.9750 for more. 

Whiteville Dixie Youth baseball registration ends Feb. 25. You may register online via the link on the Wolfpack Optimist Facebook page. Make sure you follow the page to get all the updates on the upcoming season. The fee is $50 per child. 

“When you buy a box of cookies for yourself, would you like to buy a box for a resident at Boys & Girls Homes too?” This is the approach Girl Scout Troop 4265 took when selling cookies because they wanted each of the children at the BGHNC to have their own box.  

A benefit bake sale for Roy Tickle will take place on Feb. 26 from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at San Jose Restaurant and Cantina. Tickle was airlifted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center on Jan. 18 due to a stroke. He was recently diagnosed with Covid and pneumonia and remains in intensive care.  He’s the 36-year-old father of 8-year-old Maycee Tickle and a tow truck driver for ACE Towing. It was his daughter’s idea to have a bake sale to raise money for Tickle’s medical expenses.  
 

Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue organization, is building a 56-acre big cat sanctuary located in Fair Bluff. They need volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing, top railing and kickers on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

The Greater Tabor City Chamber of Commerce will be having their 76th annual banquet on Tuesday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ritz Center. The meal will be catered by Martha Hardwick Catering, and Tabor City Town Manager Al Leonard will be the guest speaker for the evening. The cost is $25 per person.
