The Good News for March 18-26

With warmer weather comes the smell of good eats and great gatherings. Venture to Lake Waccamaw and enjoy some time in the sun at the Boys and Girls Home arena for the biggest event of the season.

Southern Farm Days is back this year at the Boys and Girls Homes Equine Center. Gates will open Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and Sunday at 10 a.m. There will be craft vendors, tractor and farm displays, tractor activities, a swap meet, auction, horse and mule plowing, entertainment and much more. WTXY 103.9 Kool FM will be broadcasting live from the event on Saturday. Admission for adults is $10, and children 11 years old and younger get in free. Fair Bluff Baptist Church will be hosting a BBQ plate and bake sale on Saturday from 10:30 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Plates are $9 each, and proceeds for the event will go directly to the renovation of the FBBC’s youth building that damaged by flood waters. Cakes and pies can be bought whole or by the slice at the event. The church is located at 1205 Main Street in Fair Bluff.  

Columbus County resident Sue Boykin will be holding a relief drive for Ukrainians on Wednesday, March 23 from 3-7 p.m. Boykin and friends will be in the Hills parking lot in Lake Waccamaw with an enclosed trailer to store donations that they will transport on Thursday to Wilmington to be shipped overseas. Items needed include baby food and supplies; sleeping bags; first aid kits; canned, dried and nonperishable food; winter clothing for people of all ages; soap; Tylenol; feminine hygiene products; bath supplies, and other basics.

Winners for the Columbus County Youth and Families Association Virtual Bites contest have been announced. Chef-in-training first place was Caroline Palmer and Jude Stanley. Chef-in-training Honorable Mention goes to Mason Evers. Second place winner was Alex Benton, and second place is Charlotte Benton. Rebekah Benton won third place. Not pictured are Chefs in-training third place Emma Miller and Peyton McPherson.  

Whiteville Parks and Recreation is currently accepting Dixie Youth Boys Baseball sign-ups for ages 13-14 years old through April 1. Fees are $15 for the city and $25 for the county. A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration.

Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue needs volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. 

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift a minimum of 20 pounds, and be comfortable working outside. No experience is necessary. Groups are welcome. To sign up, please contact Rhonda Billeaud at [email protected] or call 910.840.1886.

The Veterans Park of America received a big shot in the arm Tuesday from the BB&T Truist Lighthouse Foundation. The non-profit branch of Truist Bank donated $5,000 toward construction at the park. Lighthouse representatives and volunteers met at the park for the presentation. We have photos and more here at Columbus County News Dot com.

The Youth United Conference will be on Friday, March 25 from 3 p.m.- 9 p.m. at Cerro Gordo Baptist Church. The event is sponsored by the Columbus Baptist Association and the Tabor City Youth Fest organization. The cost is $5 at the door and includes music, food, an obstacle course, and door prizes. Youth United is for children grades 7-12. The church is located at 257 Church Street in Cerro Gordo.

Whiteville Police Department recently welcomed a new member into their ranks. Jonathan Pickering was sworn in as new patrol officer last week. 

The Veteran’s Memorial Park will be hosting a “Spring Forward for Vets” event on Saturday, March 26 at 6 p.m. at the Clarkton Entertainment Center. The price is $100 per ticket, and each ticket includes two meals, a 10-gun raffle, and entertainment by the Black Water Band.

Jason Mott

Award-winning author Jason Mott will be at Southeastern Community College on Sunday, April 24 at 3 p.m. in the SCC Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow in the lobby of the college’s A-Building.

Major sponsors include Friends of Rube McCray Memorial Library (RMML), Southeastern Community College Foundation, the Literary Committee of the Reuben Brown House Preservation Society, and private individuals. RMML Waccamaw Book Club initiated the program. Admission is free.
