Bethel United Methodist Church will be having their annual Famous Fried Chicken Supper Drive-Thru fundraiser on Saturday, March 5 from 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m. The cost is $10 per plate and will include chicken, potato salad, green beans, biscuit, and a dessert. The church is located at M.M. 

Ray Road in Clarendon.   

The Whiteville Junior Woman’s Club’s Artic Alligator Plunge will take place on Saturday, March 5 at 9 a.m. Contestants will jump off the pier at the Lake Waccamaw State Park, and the contestant who raised the most money will decide if they will take the plunge or stay dry, and take home the official winner title.  

Participants this year are Postman Print Shop owner Jonathan Medford; Wolfpack head coach J.P. Price; Clerk of Court Jess Hill; Lake Waccamaw Fire Chief Brandy Nance; SCC Small Business Center Director Pamela Young- Jacobs; business owner Peyton Gerald; local resident Matresse McAllister; Lake Waccamaw Mayor Matt Wilson; County Manager Eddie Madden, and Whiteville Police Officer Josh Harris.  

The H.E.A.R.T.S organization will be having a stoplight donation drive on Saturday, March 5 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. in front of Hardee’s in Chadbourn. Proceeds from the drive will go toward education events hosted by H.E.A.R.T.S. throughout the year.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services had a big day this past Thursday. Samantha Baxley, Rescue Coordinator for the CCSAPS, worked with Rusty’s Animal Legacy transport to find new homes for 68 furbabies.  

Thomas Academy, charter school at Lake Waccamaw, will be having their monthly school board meeting on Tuesday, March 8, from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.  The meeting can be accessed from your computer, tablet or smartphone.

The Lake Waccamaw Town Council will meet Tuesday, March 8, at 6 p.m. at Town Hall. The meeting is open to the public, but all who attend must wear a mask while in the building.  

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office welcomed Bishop Randy Hunt to the department on Feb. 24. Hunt was sworn in as Chaplain by Magistrate Norris. He will be joining Rev. Dave Heller and Deputy Williams on the Chaplain team.  

Bishop Hunt is welcomed to the chaplain team by Sheriff Jody Greene and Rev. Dave Heller.

Whiteville Parks and Recreation is currently accepting T-Ball sign-ups through March 18. Registration is for children ages 4-6, and fees are $15 for the city and $25 for the county. A copy of your child’s birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration. 

Greg Thompson will officially open Brown Street Station in Chadbourn Saturday, March 5, at 11 a.m. The entertainment venue will bring stage shows and more to the restored and repurposed building downtown. The Station is located on Brown Street in the downtown business district.

It’s coming up on baby wildlife season in our area. If you find a baby mammal or bird that is not in immediate danger, Wildlife officials urge you to leave it alone. If the critter is hurt or truly abandoned, go to ncwildlife.org, or call local rehabilitator Rhonda Weaver at 910.685.3048.
