The May 2 shooting of a Tabor City man has led to the arrest of a suspect from the Chadbourn area.

Kason Durante Johnson, 43, is being held under no bond on a single count of first degree murder, jail records show. Johnson listed his address as 501 Grice Rd., Chadbourn.

Warrants show that Johnson is alleged to have shot Willie Lee Wheeler, 67, in his Lewis Street home. The killing occurred just before 10:30 a.m. Two officers responding to a call at the home found Wheeler dead inside.

Police Chief Donald Dowless said the State Bureau of Investigation was called in to handle the homicide.

Sheriff’s Office incident reports show that Johnson reported being assaulted and robbed at his home on May 7, 2021. Two unknown black males allegedly attacked him and stole $200 and a telephone SIM card, according to the report.

The killing was the first for Tabor City since last year, and the third for the county overall in 2022. The warrant was obtained by the SBI.
