An inmate facing charges of child molestation and attempting to escape is now facing additional weapon and escape charges.

Gerson Daniel Brown, 25, of 844 Whitehall Road Whiteville, was charged Monday with possession of a weapon by a prisoner and attempted escape. He was charged and returned to custody in the county detention center.

Brown is alleged to have had a razor blade on his person, and another in his cell at the detention center June 2, according to warrants. The escape charge came after Brown was caught tampering with his cell door “after repeated warnings for previous attempts,” the warrant said.

Brown is under $750,000 secured bond after his April 2021 arrest for statutory rape. He is alleged to have had intercourse with a girl from the time she was six until she turned 12.

It wasn’t Brown’s first time trying to make a jail break.

In March, Brown, Anthony Wade Lamb and Omonte Bell allegedly managed to disable the lock on their cell door at the detention center. Chief Deputy Aaron Herring said the inmates were immediately subdued and could not have made it past several other locked doors.

Lamb, 32, was arrested by Columbus County deputies on charges of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, altering a serial number, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He has since been transferred back to South Carolina. Bell is charged with two counts of murder, attempted murder and conspiracy for his role in a Wilmington killing last year.
