An argument over property led to a shooting in April, and an arrest June 28.

James Henry Smith, 38, was released on a $15,000 bond on charges of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and possession of a firearm by a felon. His address was listed as 515 E. Fifth St., Lumberton.

The sheriff’s office reported that Norman Watkins purchased property on Parker’s Drive, Evergreen, that had been sold at a tax auction. Bernice Andrew Smith, 65, was the previous owner of the property.

Watkins was cleaning up the property when he was confronted by the elder Smith. During an  argument over who owned the property, Bernice Smith allegedly struck Watkins in the head. James Smith then reportedly fired a handgun at Watkins, striking him in the lower abdomen, and then fled the scene.

A responding deputy found Watkins suffering from a gunshot wound. Watkins was transported by ambulance to Columbus Regional, and later airlifted to another facility.

Warrants were obtained for James Smith, and he turned himself in June 28, the sheriff’s office said. Watkins is recovering from his injuries.
