The chase for a stolen car ended after a teen suspect allegedly rammed a patrol car in Whiteville Saturday.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 17-year-old suspect allegedly took a Nissan Altima at gunpoint Saturday in Elizabethtown just before 3 p.m. Elizabetown Police pursued the suspect into Columbus County and the city limits of Whiteville, heading down Warrior Trail.

Near Jones Place, the driver allegedly slowed down and tossed a Ruger handgun out the window to a waiting youth, then sped away. That suspect, age 14, retrieved the Ruger and fled on foot. He fell in a ditch while being chased on foot by a deputy, and threw the gun, which landed behind the deputy.

The vehicle pursuit continued to the Covey Run apartments. Near the intersection of Covey Run and Covey Quail lanes, the teen allegedly turned the Nissan toward a patrol car and rammed the deputy head-on. The Nissan then went into an adjacent parking lot, where the boy was arrested. No one was injured in the pursuit, the foot chase or the collision.

The driver was charged on a juvenile petition with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, altering, destroying it stealing evidence; reckless driving, and multiple traffic offenses. He also faces charges in Elizabethtown.

The second suspect was charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and altering, destroying it stealing evidence.
