Three Assaults Reported

The sheriff’s office is investigating three assaults that were reported over the weekend.

Randy Hayes was attacked at his home on Kenneth Hayes Lane near Chadbourn during an argument over property, reports show. The suspect and Hayes argued over personal property, according to the report, and the male suspect allegedly hit Hayes with a board, causing several lacerations.

In an unrelated case, a request to use a telephone led to an assault and robbery on Saturday.

Donald and Samuel Smith told deputies they were attacked by two men and a woman at a home on Pine Log Road. The woman reportedly came to the door asking to use a phone, the report said, and the two men forced their way inside. The suspects demanded money, then forced the Smiths to the ground. Samuel Smith was struck in the head and arm, according to the report. The suspects took a handgun, cash, a wallet and a cellphone. Samuel Smith was transported to Columbus Regional for injuries. The incident was reported at 12:50 p.m.

The third assault occurred Sunday at the intersection of Daisy Lane and Peacock Road near Tabor City just before 6 p.m.

Reports show that Charles Canty told deputies he was standing at the intersection when a car pulled up and several men jumped out. They began chasing Canty, according to the report, and he fled on foot. He was shot in the leg while escaping, the report said. Canty was transported to Columbus Regional for treatment.

All three cases are under investigation.
