Heavy Rains Pound County

An overnight storm brought five to six inches of rain across much off the county Sunday night and early Monday.

Meteorologist Christopher Cawley said six inches of rain fell at his weather station on college Street in Whiteville during the overnight hours.

The rains led to some moderate flooding in some areas. Pleasant Plains Road had water across the roadway near Gore Trailer at 8 a.m. Areas around Tabor City also saw some roadway flooding. U.S. 74 had some ponding as late as 8 a.m. Moderate flooding was reported in the usual trouble spots on the highway at 3 a.m.

The storm took aim at Whiteville, dropping tree limbs and overwhelming storm drains in some areas. Ongoing ditch improvements, however, helped move much of the water to Soules Swamp before out could become dangerously backed up.

Felix Smith Park in Whiteville had to be closed temporarily Monday while publics works crews cleared a drain. Knee-deep water filled the park at 10 a.m. The park is designed around a storm drain that pulls water from throughout the area on Franklin Street.

Additional heavy rains and possibly some severe thunderstorms are forecast for later today.
