The rain may put a damper on going outside this weekend, but there is still plenty to do indoors in Columbus. Competitions and church events are still happening in our area. On Saturday, Sept. 23, local organizations will duke it out at the Brunswick Stew Festival from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Columbus County Fairgrounds. The grounds are located at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.  

Mishop Springs Community Church is having a one-day fall fling at their tent revival on Sept. 23 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. There will be music, speakers, and lunch provided at the event. The church can be found at 2756 Pine Log Road in Whiteville. 

Mt. Zion Amez Church in Lake Waccamaw will be celebrating their 141-year anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. “Come as you are, but don’t leave as you came,” announced the Zion family. The community and surrounding church families are invited to come and join in on the food and fellowship and listen to Rev. Leo Clemmons speak. Guest speaker Rev. Thomas Williams of St. Pauls Amez Church of Bolton will also bring the word. The church is located at 107 Mount Zion Street.  

Bladen County 4th of July Royal Majestic Miss Hayden Taylor Ornelas visited the Bladen County Sherriff’s Office to drop off some sweet treats. Lt. James White and Deputy David Donaldson were happy to pose with the little princess.

The ‘See You at the Pole’ youth rally will be on Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. in the Whiteville Fun Factory parking lot. There will be blowups, games, food, live music and more with guest speaker Jon Goforth. The event is sponsored by the CBA and several other churches in the area. Fun Factory is located at 42 Hill Plaza in Whiteville. Be sure to meet your peers at your school’s flagpole on Sept. 27 thirty minutes before the school day starts to pray for a successful year.  

Tabor City will be having a community yard sale on Oct. 7 from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Garrell Depot located 105 Railroad Street. Local folks will be selling gently used items while Tabor City Fire Department will be selling hot dog or chilli burger combos with chips and drinks. A $15 dollar space fee is required at the time of registration, and you can sign up through Oct. 4.

The Grissettown Longwood Fire Department will once again hold their annual Grissettown Haunted Trail beginning on Oct. 6-7. The event will run every Saturday and Sunday on Halloween night from 7-10 p.m. Tickets are $15 each. The station is located at 758 Longwood Road in Ocean Isle Beach.  

All area churches are invited to come and join the community prayer event ‘Fields of Flags’ on Wednesday, Oct. 11, starting at 7 p.m. at Legion Stadium. The student-lead event invites youth to share and pray with their peers and challenge them to read the Bible and follow Jesus Christ. The venue’s address is 1323 Chadbourn Avenue in Whiteville.  

Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church will be having their ‘OktoberFest’ gospel and praise event on Oct. 21 from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. There will be vendors, music, and more. If you would like to be a vendor at the event, contact Tonya Lennon at 910.234.1102. The cost for set up is $25. The church can be found at 5548 Silver Spoon Road in Whiteville. 

Southeastern Community College, the H.E.A.R.T.S. Foundation, and Columbus County Parks and Recreation will be holding a trunk or treat ‘Safe Nite’ for kids. The event is set for Tues, Oct. 31, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the college and will feature food, candy, games, and lots of fun for the little ones. Rick and Morty are looking for their furever homes. Both boys are very sweet and loving. Rick is approximately 3 years old and Morty is around 6 months old. The adoption fee is $55.00 each and includes rabies and a neuter voucher. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services is located at 288 Legion Drive in Whiteville.

The Whiteville Junior Woman’s Club wants to remind you to save an important date for the upcoming holiday season. The club’s annual Mistletoe Market will be on Dec. 1 from 12-8 p.m. and Dec. 2 from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Columbus County Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 each, and kids ages 12 and under get in free. The market will feature food trucks, vendors, Christmas mini photo sessions, a Kid’s Zone, and free gift wrapping will be provided by the Whiteville Juniorettes.  

Downtown Whiteville also has the date of the Christmas parade set for those who would like to spectate or participate. The extravaganza will be on Saturday, Dec. 2, with the parade at 6 p.m., the tree lighting at 7:30 p.m., and carriage rides from 5-10 p.m.
