Security Increased at Nakina After Threat

Nakina Middle School has an increased security presence today after a specific threat against the school.

Kelly Jones of Columbus County Schools said parents were notified Thursday night of a threat against NMS. The threat was found on social media, Jones said.  Classes were not cancelled, he said, and parents were not advised to keep their children out of school, contrary to social media posts.

On the school’s official Facebook page, officials said Thursdayu night they were notified by the sheriff’s office.

“We are reaching out to let you know that school and district officials have been in constant communication with law enforcement, who are taking appropriate actions to ensure the safety of our students and our schools. Learning will continue at school tomorrow; however, out of an abundance of caution, there will be additional law enforcement on campus Friday, October 20th.”

Parents of Old Dock students were also notified, Jones said, since ODES shares buses with NMS.

“Please know that we take all threats to student safety seriously, and are committed to providing you an honest assessment and transparency when issues arise. We also encourage you to talk with your children about the seriousness of online threats, and encourage them to communicate with an adult if they see anything concerning online.”

Two students were charged after bomb threats at Whiteville High and West Columbus High earlier this month. Prosecution was deferred against a student at Central Middle in Whiteville, and another alleged threat at Central Middle was investigated by school officials and law enforcement.

The investigation into the latest threat is continuing.
