Charges are pending after a man allegedly tried to speed through a checking station and wrecked, injuring a woman and a two year old girl.

The sheriff’s office reported that deputies were operating a checkpoint on Silver Spoon Road and N.C. 131 just after midnight Saturday morning when Lonnie Fields approached the officers.

The vehicle allegedly sped through the station “in an attempt to avoid the (license) check,” according to the sheriff’s office, and ran off the road, striking a tree and overturning.

Fields had to be extricated from the vehicle by North Whiteville firefighters, according to the report. He was transferred to New Hanover Regional.

Deputies found a quantity of marijuana on Fields’ person after he was rescued.

Ronah Moore, a passenger in the vehicle, and the toddler were taken to Columbus Regional. The child was later turned over to Social Services.

In addition to multiple traffic violations, Fields could face charges of assault with a deadly weapon against a government official, negligence resulting in the injury of a child, maintaining a vehicle for drug activities, and other charges.
