Filing Begins for March Primaries

Today (Monday) was the start of filing for the March primaries.

All the council of state positions are on next year’s ballot including the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state auditor, and state treasurer; Commissioners of agriculture, insurance and labor, and State Superintendent for Public Instruction.

Also open are a seat on the N.C. Supreme Court and three on the N.C. Court of Appeals. All 170 state House and Senate races are on the ballot, as are all 14 of the state’s congressional seats.

Local races include the county commissioner seats held by Chris Smith, Giles “Buddy” Byrd, Lavern Coleman and Brent Watts; and Register of Deeds Kandance Bullock.

Several city school board seats are also open in the 2024 elections.  The at-large seat currently held by Ronald Fisher I on the ballot, along with seats held by Anna Richardson in District 1; David Flowers in District 2; Kandle Rogers in District 3, and Greg Merritt in District 4. Rogers stepped down from the chair’s position after she was found guilty of assaulting a Whiteville Public Works employee during Hurricane Idalia’s flooding. The charges were later dropped.

Rep. Brenden Jones announced on social media Sunday that he will be running for the Republican nomination to return to the legislature for Columbus.

Winners in the March primaries will go on to the November General Elections.

The filing period ends December 15.
