Trailer Fire Called Arson

An early morning fire destroyed a mobile home near Farmer’s Union, and the Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire was intentional. It was the second fire at the home in less than a month.

Firefighters were called to 53 Shelly’s Lane at 4:20 a.m. Monday (today), Dep. Fire Marshal Jonathan Juhl said. The singlewide was completely engulfed when units arrived.

“There was no power to the home, and nobody living there,” Juhl said. “A neighbor called it in.”

The first time the home was set on fire was May 24, Juhl said. A neighbor also called in that blaze.

“It was obvious someone had tried to burn the structure,” Juhl said. “This fire was very similar to the earlier call.”

The person residing in the home died of natural causes at the property May 16, Juhl said. It has been unoccupied and without power since the May 24 fire.

The fire marshal and sheriff’s office are investigating the fires.

Departments responding to the fire included White Marsh Welches Creek, St. James, Hallsboro, North Whiteville and Clarkton. Whiteville Rescue and the fire marshal’s office also deployed.
