The Good News for Oct 19, 2024

There’s a lot going on in our community over the next couple weeks. Get outside and enjoy this beautiful fall weather and have some fun.

It’s Pow Wow time at the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Center in Buckhead. You can enjoy traditional music, dance competitions, native crafts, food and much more Friday and Saturday. The 51st annual festival goes on through Saturday night. The tribal center is located on Old Lake Road.

The hurricane donation center is once again open for business. Warm clothing, gas and kerosene heaters, small LP tanks, cleaning supplies  and hand tools are being accepted at the Black’s Tire facility in the former Ford dealership. Cash donations are also needed to help fund operations. Volunteers are need to help sort, pack and load items as well. Contact the Columbus Baptist Association for more information.

Also, County Commissioner Lavern Coleman and Reverend Lamont Hemminger are collecting warm clothes and heaters in the east end of the county. Contact them if you’re in the Riegelwood Delco area.

Lake Waccamaw will be the only North Carolina location hosting World Singing Day Saturday, and more voices are welcome. World Singing Day will take place in 24 nations this year, with 42 events in America. Participants should be at the Depot Museum at Lake Waccamaw at 11 a.m. For more information go to ColCoSings on Facebook.

The Tabor City Yam Festival starts next Friday. There will be a full slate of events, and we’ll be broadcasting the parade live via the CCN Facebook page with our own Darell Jackson providing commentary. The theme this year is “Here a yam, There a yam, Everywhere a yamyam.”

Raven Williamson and Columbus County EMS have been transporting ambulance loads of supplies to the Lansing area this week. Columbus County EMS has been focusing on specific requests for specific places, and has done yeoman’s work getting folks what they need and when. True to her first responder calling, Williamson’s crews delivered badly needed turnout gear to a fire department that lost everything but is still out there helping their citizens.

We have two heroes for this week, although there are so many to choose from. Miss Raven and her crews, as well as the folks at Black’s Tire, are providing that vital link between donation centers and those in need. All the stuff in the world does no good if it’s not where it can be used. The good folks at BTS have really stepped up, using their new facility for a donation and packing center, as well as their trucks and drivers to deliver. This is the type of spirit that makes our county a special place.
