Loris Man Jailed in Woman’s Death

 

A Loris man has been jailed under no bond in Tuesday’s slaying of a Whiteville woman.

Whiteville Police and Horry County Police arrested Anthony Sumpter, 52, in the early morning hours of April 17 (today).  He has been charged with murder and is awaiting extradition from South Carolina.

Terri Lashay Thompson was found in her Covey Run apartment after failing to pick up her children from school Tuesday afternoon. Whiteville Police went to the home for a wellness check, and found her deceased.

Police worked “around the clock” to identify and arrest Sumpter, WPD Chief Paul Rockenbach said.

“The swift and successful arrest is a direct result of the hard work, professionalism, and relentless dedication of the men and women of the Whiteville Police Department,” Rockenbach said. “The Whiteville Police Department Investigative Services Division works around the clock to bring justice to all victims of all crimes.”

WPD was assisted by Columbus County Sheriff’s Office, Horry County Police Department, North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement division. Rockenbach also thanked members of the community ‘who came forward with vital information pertaining to the case.”

It was the second murder arrest in less than 48 hours for the department. Jauize Lamar Cribbs, 19, was shot to death Sunday morning on J.K. Powell Boulevard. Kapri Oman McMillian, 32, was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Lumberton for that killing. The takedown was a joint effort by WPD. Lumberton Police, the Columbus and Robeson County sheriff’s offices, the State Bureau of Investigation and N.C. Alcohol Law Enforcement. McMillian has been charged with murder, two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, and discharging a weapon into occupied property. More arrests are anticipated in the case, Rockenbach said.
