Brews and Bites: Food Truck Fun with Kona Ice

By Justin Williamson

Food truck vendors seem to be continually rising in popularity in our area. I have had the pleasure of covering several here on the Brews and Bites section at CCN. This week I’m ready to clear up any questions about a fun little truck: Kona Ice.

I encountered Kona Ice this weekend outside of where I had just finished playing some music and entertaining with my sister, as we do from time to time in our duo act, the Oak Street Wonderers. Saturday’s temps were very favorable, but we were both still thirsty and in need of a little refreshment.

The walk up vibe for Kona is nice. A brightly colored truck, well wrapped with fun graphics and a clean approach. The menu here is simple, but the flavor list is not! I was not ready for the over 30 available choices of flavors and even more with mix up combos. They have everything you could imagine from fruits to coffee to candy to something called “Tiger’s Blood”. It’s a top seller for them, though I don’t have a clue what it tastes like.

I went with a very basic Pina Colada for my selection. It was refreshing and very good. The hints of coconut and pineapple hit me well. Jeni went with a Grape-Blueberry mix- up. We both enjoyed our treats as we braced for that dreaded brain freeze phenomenon that often accompanies a frozen beverage.

Just a tip Kona Ice, if you could add a shot of tequila or rum into the mix… you’d be onto a real fun adult summer situation.

I asked about getting them out to your event and they definitely are ready to help you with getting a frozen treat to your party or club event. They are often found at sporting events and festivals in our area. They have regularly scheduled sites that make them a staple here in the Whiteville and Tabor City communities.

Rating: 4/5.  Not encore worthy, but definitely in the zone. They only do shaved ice cups, and they are good at it. Nothing much more to say — if you want a shaved ice treat, get with these guys asap. They are floating around the county somewhere this week. Contact them at www.kona-ice.com for vendor services.

As I say each week, skip driving out of town and support our local folks right here in Columbus County. Let’s bring life and energy to our local area businesses. I am open to take your feedback or suggestions. Email me at Positiveflownc@gmail.com.

Thanks for reading,
