News Briefs for May 23, 2025
Premiums and deductibles for government workers on the state employee health plan will go up substantially next year after a vote by the Health Plan Board of Trustees on Tuesday. Primary care and specialist visits will see very little change, and additional benefits will be available at no cost under the new plan. State Treasurer Brad Briner and SHP administrators said the changes will address the plan’s projected deficit of $507 million in 2026, which is expected to grow to $900 million in 2027. Premiums have been kept artificially low for eight years by the use of cash reserves, which are running dangerously low.
The National Weather Service released its annual tropical forecast. After an exceedingly active and deadly 2024 season, conditions appear favorable for similar patterns this year. Emergency officials note that forecasts can quickly change, and now is the time to assemble your emergency kit and plan. Officials are reminding people to focus on the path of a storm, not its intensity. Last year’s “almost” tropical depression caused catastrophic flooding in Brunswick County and Eastern Columbus County, but never reached hurricane status.
