Inmate Charged with Attempted Murder of Guard

A convicted murderer is in close custody after an alleged assault at Columbus Correctional  left a guard hospitalized Saturday.

Alfonso “Sweet” Lewis, 35, was charged with attempted murder of Corrections Officer A. Lynch, according to warrants. A press release from the N.C. Dept. of Adult Corrections said Lewis was transferred from Columbus Correctional to Granville Correctional, the most secure facility in the state.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the assault, the press release said. The sheriff’s office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Lynch is expected to recover, the NCDAC said.

Lewis was convicted of first degree murder in Gastonia in 2010. The murder involved a dispute over drugs, according to court records. He has an extensive list of violations, including fighting, being an “active rioter,” possession of a weapon by a prisoner, gambling, selling medications, and assaulting an officer with a weapon.
