Clarkton Store Hosts General Lee Sunday

Clarkton will experience some “Hazzardous” conditions Sunday, as an iconic television car makes an appearance.

The Helms General Lee, a replica of the car used in the Dukes of Hazzard television show, will be at the store from noon until 2 p.m. Joe Hardee said the visit is part of the store’s Independence Day weekend activities.

“We are turning this into a full community event you will not want to miss,” Hardee said.

Visitors are invited to take photos of the car, visit with their neighbors “and enjoy a fun afternoon full of small town excitement,” he said.

Jason and Jabo Helms of Abbotsburg built the exact replica of the 1969 Dodge Charger as a tribute to the family’s favorite television show. Actual Dodge Chargers used in the program are extremely rare, since most were destroyed doing famous stunts and jumps.

The car is authentic down to the Confederate flag on the roof, the painted 01 on the sides and the novelty horn. The father and son detailed the re-creation of the car and some of their other restorations in their book, “My Hero Is a Duke… of Hazzard: The Helms Family Edition” available on Amazon.

Sunday’s event will be at the Circle H Thrift Shop, 80 E. Green St., Clarkton. See the event page on Facebook for more information.
