Four-Wheeler Complaints Lead to Meth

A wanted man was jailed on meth charges after citizen complaints about reckless ATV riding in Cerro Gordo, the sheriff’s office said.

William Colbey Carroll, 34, is being held under $65,000 bond on charges of felony probation violation, possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia, according to detention center records. His address was listed as 838 Bullard Rd.

Carroll was captured June 17 after complaints about four-wheelers being driven on the roadways in the area, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

Deputies assigned to the Special Operations Division’s Heavy Enforcement Action Team responded to the Porter Swamp Road area after receiving complaints from citizens concerning four-wheelers being operated in the community. At approximately 11 p.m., deputies located a four-wheeler being operated on the roadway and conducted a traffic stop.

The operator was identified as Carroll. During the investigation, deputies conducted a records check and learned that Carroll had an outstanding warrant related to a felony probation violation. While being detained, Carroll held an unidentified item tightly in his right hand and did not initially comply with repeated commands to release it.

Deputies were able to secure Carroll and discovered that the item was clear plastic wrapping containing a crystal-like substance suspected to be methamphetamine. Deputies also recovered a glass smoking pipe from Carroll.

“This arrest highlights the important role citizens play in helping law enforcement address concerns within their communities,” the press release said. “Information provided by residents allows deputies to identify problem areas, investigate suspicious activity, and take appropriate enforcement action when violations are discovered.”

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office said citizens should never place themselves in danger or attempt to intervene when they suspect criminal activity. Anyone witnessing an emergency or an incident in progress should call 911.
