A felony death by vehicle charge has been filed against the woman who allegedly killed a beloved local baker in a collision on N.C. 130.
Charlotte Milligan, 54, of Ash crossed the centerline and struck Mary Long head-on Sept. 9, according to the Highway Patrol. Long died at the scene. Milligan was originally charged with driving while impaired, misdemeanor death by vehicle, and driving while license revoked, the State Highway Patrol said.
Court documents show Milligan told investigators she took methadone shortly before the crash. The wreck occurred in the Ash community, near the Columbus-Brunswick line.
Milligan was charged with aggravated felony death by vehicle. The charge requires that a driver be impaired during a fatal crash, and have been previously convicted of driving while impaired within the last seven years. Her most recent previous conviction for DWI was in December in Brunswick County.
Long was from Crusoe Island, and was well-known for supplying cakes for weddings, birthdays and other events.
