A checking station near Whiteville Sept. 23 led to a brief chase and an armed felon.
Jaeshan Daryan Freeman, 23, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, carrying a concealed weapon, failure to heed light and siren, driving with a revoked license, and failure to carry a valid driver’s license. He was held under no bond. Court documents listed his address as 5640 Silver Spoon Rd., Whiteville.
The sheriff’s office said Freeman pulled up to the checkpoint at Pine Log Road and Legion Drive and was unable to provide a license. He was asked to pull to the shoulder. While he was moving the Toyota, the CCSO said, Freeman allegedly drove off on Legion Drive.
A deputy found his vehicle in a driveway off Pinewood Drive, and the deputy requested the assistance of a K9 team. The dog alerted on the vehicle, resulting in the discovery and confiscation of a 9mm Dagger handgun.
Court records show that in 2024. Freeman pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury and sentenced to three years of probation. Freeman was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a handgun by a minor, and other charges in that incident. The other charges were dropped as part of the plea agreement.
In that incident, Freeman is alleged to have burst into a home on Georgia Pacific Road near Whiteville on Sept. 4, 2023 and opened fire. Delena Shipman was hit once in the leg, while her son Davion Frink was hit at least five times. Frink was airlifted to New Hanover Regional. Shipman was treated locally.
