Check out Fair Bluff’s First Saturday Market at the Rotary Park, head over to Bolton for the Pine Tree Festival, or ride for a good cause this weekend.

Halloween and Fall activities are rolling into the newsroom for October. Send your church, school, or organization’s submissions for fundraisers, trunk or treats, or fall festivals. We will also publish those events at no cost to you.
Daisy Vereen Brooks and the Facts of Life Community Outreach Program hosts their Nourish Hope distribution event every Wednesday at 11 a.m. to N.C. and S.C. residents. The food drive is held at the church located at 24678 Peacock Road in Tabor City. For more info, visit their website at www.factsoflifeoutreach.org.
The Columbus County Community Farmers Market opens on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.
The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. The market is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
Everyone can use a little help these days, and several religious organizations are doing their best to ensure that residents in Columbus County don’t go hungry. There are food banks and hot meal opportunities throughout the week available to those in need.

Chadbourn Baptist Church will be having a blood drive on Thursday, Oct. 1, from 1-6 p.m. You can make an appointment by visiting www.redcrossblood.org or by calling 910.640.8157.
All blood types are needed for this event, and everyone is welcome to donate. The church can be found at 504 North Howard Street in Chadbourn.
Fair Bluff will have their First Saturday Market on Oct. 3 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m., but the chamber is asking everyone to note that there will be a change in the location of this month’s gathering. Riverside Drive is in the middle of a rebuild, so the market will move to the Rotary Park across from the Visitors Center.
All vendors are welcome to set up, and there is no need to file an application to participate. There will be no water access or power at the park, and everyone is asked to set up around the perimeter at the facility and along the railroad track.
The town of Bolton will be a busy place on Oct. 3 beginning at 10 a.m. with the 27th annual Pine Tree Festival and parade. They are currently taking entries for the procession along with bands and drumlines, and craft, food, jewelry, and clothing vendors are invited to sign up to setup at the festival.

Families First will also have a big event on Saturday evening, Oct. 3, from 6-9 p.m. with the Rock the Runway fundraiser. Join them for a night of fashion and entertainment while supporting the women’s domestic violence shelter.
The fundraiser is for folks 21 and up, and the cost is $45 per ticket. There will be heavy hor dourerves, beer, and wine included with admission. A silent auction will also be held.

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will be having their 150 Pheasant Tower Shoot on Oct. 10 at the Honey Hill Hunting Preserve in Hallsboro. The 8 a.m. slots are sold out, but the 10:30 a.m. session still has openings available. Lunch will be included.
The price is $200 per shooter, four shooters per peg, with ten pegs total. There will be 150 pheasants released at each time slot. All proceeds from the shoot will benefit the park. ‘

The Columbus County Community Farmers Market will be having the Fall Festival at the Market on Oct. 10. The all-day event will feature a trunk or treat and a car show, and Razor rides will be available starting at 5 p.m.
Chicken bog and BBQ plates will be sold for $10 each until sold out, and the day will also feature pumpkin carving, games and family fun, lots of food, and tons of great items for sale. The market can be found at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.
A benefit ride fundraiser for medical and funeral expenses will be held on Oct. 10 for the late Terry Walker. Registration is at 9 a.m. at Cruzers Drive Thru, and kickstands go up at 10 a.m. The cost is $15 for a single rider and $20 with a passenger, and the route will stop at various locations around the county.
There will be a separate benefit meal after the ride prepared by Walt Monroe at Cruzers. Those interested in either of the fundraisers can contact Will McCulloch at 910.840.6033.
The Columbus County Agricultural Fair has a new category for the artwork contest this year. All barn quilt painters can now submit their hand painted pieces for judging no later than Saturday, Oct. 10. The canvases will be on display at the fair from Oct. 13-18.
The fairgrounds are located at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.
Columbus Regional Healthcare System will hold a very special event on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the main entrance of CRHS. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the facility will host ‘Give Cancer the Boot’ with free health screenings and a mini health fair featuring free 3D mammograms.
Those who are uninsured and would like to receive a mammogram are asked to call 910.640.4077. You will also be registered in a special raffle. CRHS is located at 500 Jefferson Street in Whiteville.

**Ladies, please be sure to take advantage of the free mammograms and screenings offered at Columbus Regional. Early detection of breast cancer and other diseases can save your life or the life of a loved one.
I know you’ve all heard the rumors that mammograms are painful and awkward, but that simply isn’t true when it comes to CRHS staff. Speaking from experience, the ladies there are incredibly sweet and very gentle during the screenings, and the whole ten-minute process is only mildly uncomfortable.
I’ve had several women in my life who are still here thanks to these efforts, so I encourage you to please get those mammograms every year. **
The Family Birthing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System is inviting expectant mothers in their third trimester and their partners to attend birthing classes at the facility. Space is limited, but they will accommodate all interested participants.
The class will include topics like what to expect during your birth experience, the benefits of breastfeeding and how to be successful, a tour of the center, and a meet and greet with the staff. Refreshments will be served at each session.
The event is free, and each session will run from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Classes are scheduled for the following dates:
- Oct. 17
- Nov. 14
- Dec. 12
