Extra hands are needed to help a dream comemone step closer to reality later this month.

Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue, a non- profit animal rescue, is building a 56 acres sanctuary in Fair Bluff. Volunteers are needed to assist with installation of perimeter fencing and big cat, small cat and wolf habitats at SWR on Sept. 19 from 10 to 3:30 p.m.

In a press release, founder Executive Director Shazir Haque said the rescue will be a “safe haven for neglected animals to live out the remainder of their lives in a peaceful, natural environment.”

Haque said the facility will house lions, tigers, jaguars, bobcats, cougars, servals, caracals and other species that have been abandoned, orphaned or abused. He said the refuge is a true sanctuary.

“SWR will never breed, buy, sell or use animals for the purpose of entertainment,” he said in the press release, “and SWR is dedicated to preserving the lives of abused, neglected and abandoned big cats through rescue, rehabilitation, and education.)

Construction on the facility was put on hold due to the pandemic, but work is slowly getting back underway. Help is needed to set posts, attach fencing, clamps and top rails, Haque said.

All interested volunteers must be at least 18 years old, be able to lift a minimum of 20 lbs. and be comfortable working in various weather conditions. No experience is necessary.

The sanctuary is located at 658 Main Street, Fair Bluff. To volunteer, please contact Rhonda Billeaud at Rhondabilleaud@shizzyswildcatrescue.org or 910.840.1886. You can also log on to www.shizzyswildcatrescue.org.
