• We first brought you the story about Lakyn Wilson over the Independence Day weekend. Lakyn was upset when a fried cut her foot on a broken bottle in Lake Waccamaw, and set out on a cleaning binge. She gathered more than 100 bottles and cans in just a couple days. We’re glad to see this young lady’s example is being followed by others – several people have posted the results of their own lake cleanups on social media, inspired by Miss Lakyn’s efforts.

•The Whiteville DYB Nationals won out over South Columbus Fridayday 11-1 in the DYB Division 2 State championship game. Whiteville will now be heading to Mississippi for the World Series. We’re proud of all our local teams for showing folks how we play ball in Columbus County.

• Columbus County’s Dixie Darlings are on their way to the softball World series, but they need your help. The series begins July 23 in Prince George, Virginia, and the undefeated girls are raising money to help pay for the trip. You can also make your tax-deductible donation to any member of the team.

• The sheriff’s office recently had several promotions and position changes, with one being Lt. Justin Worley moving to Assistant Patrol Commander and Capt. Barett Thompson moving over our community watch groups. Bug Hill Community Watch recognized Lt. Worley for his hard work and dedication. The sheriff’s office thanked them in return. Several crimes have been stopped and solved by working together. If you’re interested in starting a community watch for your neighborhood, call the sheriff’s office during regular business hours.

• Don’t forget the WTXY car show coming up this Saturday at 9 a.m. the South Hills Plaza in Whiteville. There will be food, fun and prizes, and all proceeds go to Columbus Animal Protective Services. For more information and how to enter, go to the WTXY Facebook page.

• Speaking of Animal Services – the shelter will be having a rabies clinic and adoption fair July 31. There’s nothing saying you can’t go by and get your new best furry friend today, however. Rabies vaccinations are also available with just a telephone call. Contact them at 641.3945 for more information. Our friend Santana Mills was in a bit of a hurry Friday, and needed a rabies shot for her hound Sally May. The shelter was able to take care of her in just a few minutes, with no fuss and no wait time.

The shelter is currently at critical capacity, and a number of dogs and cats will have to be euthanized in the near future if they don’t get new homes.

• Ryder Faircloth is home from the UNC burn center, and his mom says he is already being “all-boy” again. The seven year old was seriously burned July 2 when an aerosol can exploded ina. Trash fire. Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church will be having their Vacation Bible School on Saturday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.  for children ages 2 to 12 years old.
