The Good News for April 29

Columbus County is bursting at the seams this week with events and good news. Community members, residents, and agency staff are being recognized for their kindness and achievements throughout the area.  

Laurie Parks stopped by the east end Columbus County Sheriff’s Office last week and delivered a home-made cake to welcome staff at the new location. The eastern division opened its door at the beginning of the month.  

Amanda Davis, Public Utilities Executive Assistant, is employee spotlight of the month for Columbus County. Davis was given a certificate from County Manager Edwin Madden.    

The 10th annual Barbecue on the Bluff will be on Saturday, April 30, beginning at 10 a.m. Students from the Columbus Career and College Academy Culinary Arts class will be volunteering their time to make and distribute plates at the event. Plates will be available for purchase at the Visitor’s Center located at 1054 Main Street in Fair Bluff.   

 Shizzy’s Wildcat Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue organization, is building a 56-acre big cat sanctuary located in Fair Bluff. They are in need of volunteers to help with the construction of den boxes and installation of perimeter fencing, top railing and kickers on several big cat and wolf habitats on Saturday, April 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Contact Rhonda Billeaud at 910.840.1886. 

Welcome Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church will be having their revival starting on May 1 at 6 p.m. Services for the rest of the week will run May 2-4 and begin at 7 p.m. Reverend Allen Rogers and his worship team from Life Church in Murrels Inlet will be the special guests. The church is located at 3104 Old Cribbtown Road in Chadbourn. 

The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina youngsters have been busy during the early spring. The kids have potted plants and hanging baskets at the Country Store for sale just in time for Mother’s Day. The potted plants include petunias, sweet potato vines, and lantana, and the cost is $4 each. Hanging baskets are $12. The store is located at 201 Top Tobacco Road in Lake Waccamaw. 

Whiteville Fire Department will be having a gun raffle for a Howa M1500. Tickets are $20 each, and all the proceeds will go the family of Sgt. Cameron Lemmons. The drawing will be May 13 or as soon as all the tickets are sold. The department is located at 120 East Columbus Street. 

Learn the basics of bee biology, hive equipment, seasonal management, pests, and diseases this summer at Southeastern Community College. Classes start on July 14 at 6 p.m. at the Cartrette Building. Discussions will include the importance of bees for pollination and the importance of honeybees to society. Those interested can register today at www.bit.ly/3OI6pO6 or by calling 910.788.6350. 

Columbus County Sheriff’s Animal Protective Services received a large donation of pet toys from Operation Paws for Homes. The organization is a non-profit dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of dogs and cats who have overcome great odds in North and South Carolina and Virginia.  

On Friday, May 6, R&D Amusements will be at the Brown Street event field just in time for the Strawberry Festival. The mini fair will feature rides, food, and games for folks of all ages and will be open from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. The Strawberry Encounters will also be happening that evening from 6 p.m.- 9 p.m. This event will feature food, entertainment, and berry fellowship at the Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church Family Life Center. The cost is $30, and tickets must be purchased in advance. Get yours today by dropping by United Bank or Worthington Funeral Home.   

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Tourism will be having their 43rd Anniversary Columbus County Industrial golf tournament on Friday, May. 6 at the Land-O-Lakes golf course. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and there will be a shotgun start at 12 p.m. Dinner and awards will follow the event. The cost is $280 per team and $70 per individual. The Land-O-Lakes golf course is located at 2950 Bill Hooks Road in Whiteville.
