The Good News for May 27-June 5

As summer rolls in, events in Columbus County roll out. With meals, parades, and graduations going on, there is something for everyone to get involved in this week.

Honey Hill Baptist Church made their rounds during Peace Officer Memorial Week. They stopped by Whiteville Police Department and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office to deliver croissants and handmade signs to show their appreciation for the men and women behind the badge in both the city and the county.  

The Veterans Memorial Park will hold a Memorial Day service Monday at 9 a.m. at the park on U.S. 701 South of Whiteville. The Field of Flags is also on display. Contact any member of the board to find how you can honor a veteran with a flag.

Flags on Flemington is also up this weekend, as it is for all patriotic holidays. Military, historic and patriotic flags are along the road between the Depot and Town Hall. 

The Columbus Baptist Association is now accepting four-person teams for their 12th annual Toy Store Golf Tournament to be held on Sept. 10 at Land-O-Lakes Golf Course in Whiteville. The cost to enter is $60 per player and $240 per team. The fee includes registration, a goody bad, a boxed BBQ lunch, drinks, and snacks. The event has a 44 team limit so call 910.642.2155 to reserve your spot.  

The Men and Women United for Youth and Families organization will be having a classic car, truck, and tractor show on today from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the baseball field at Acme Delco Middle School. Registration will be until 1 p.m., judging will be from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m., and the cost is $25 per vehicle. Trophies will be awarded for many categories, and food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event. Raffle tickets will also be sold for a 50/50 drawing. 

All proceeds will go toward the organization’s annual high school scholarship fundraiser. The school is located at 26133 Andrew Jackson Highway East in Delco. For more information, call Perry Dixon at 910.685.4017 or Dave Parks at 910.540.4141.

The annual Lake Waccamaw Cruise for a Cause golf cart parade will be Sunday  at 3 p.m. The theme this year is military appreciation, and proceeds from the event will be going to various veterans’ organizations.  There will be a $100 award for the best decorated golf cart, and everyone is invited to hang out on the lawn of the One Stop Convenience Store to listen to live music after the parade. 

A trailer will also be set up to collect can good donations for the local food ministry. If you wish to participate, registration and line up will be at 2 p.m. on the walking path beside Elizabeth Brinkley Park. The fee is $5 per golf cart to enter into the event.  

The H.E.A.R.T.S Foundation is now accepting donations for their back-to-school supply drive on July 30.  For more information about the event, call Lashoney Frink at 910.625.1745 or Larry Everette at 910.733.3375. For monetary donations, checks should be made out to the H.E.A.R.T.S. Foundation, and mailed to 247 Dessie Road, Chadbourn, N.C. 28431.   

 The Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio will be hosting their tribal community summer kickoff party on Monday, May 30, from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. There will be a water slide and splash pad for kids, field games, hot dogs, and a movie night. 

The STEM Studio is still actively seeking volunteers to help out with the event. They need lifeguards, supervisors for the splash pad, and cooks. For more information about the event or to sign-up to help out, contact Ashley Lomboy via Facebook.  

All 2022 South Columbus graduating seniors are invited to attend Senior Cruisin’ in Tabor City on Friday, June 3, at 7 p.m. The lineup will begin at 6:30 p.m. in front of Two Broke Teachers. There will be pizza and a DJ in the parking lot of the public library immediately following the event. Students who plan to participate can sign up by calling Toni Stocks at 910.840.52859 or Scarlet Strickland at 910.641.2091.  

On June 4, head out to the Jones Lake State Park in Elizabethtown as the museum celebrates Black Birders Week. Deja Perkins, urban ecologist and North Carolina State University Student, will be joining museum staff for a free fun filled as they lead bird walks from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and from 3 p.m.-5p.m. 

Perkins will also be giving a presentation called “Learning How Scientist Study Birds” at 1 p.m. She appeared on the museum’s podcast “Love Nature” in November 2020. Crossroads Church will be having their monthly fellowship meal on Sunday, June 5, at 11:30 a.m. The church will be providing grilled chicken and drinks and ask that the congregation bring a covered dish to help with the sides to the meal. The event will take place at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville. 

Don’t forget the Columbus community Farmers Market is every Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. The market is located on Government Complex Drive in North Whiteville, between U.S. 701 Bypass and Business.
