The weather is going to be absolutely beautiful this weekend in Columbus. Many folks are hitting the fishing hole over the next couple of days, but you could also head over to Hallsboro to run through a maze, or maybe greet some cyclists who have stopped by our neck of the woods after a weeklong trip.
• More than 1,000 bicyclists with Cycle NC will finish their mountains to the sea tour Saturday. The trip will continue through Hallsboro, stop at the Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum, and pass through Bolton before completing the trip to Holden Beach. Cyclists are expected to begin arriving at the Lake about 8:30 a.m. where food and refreshments will be waiting.
• The Columbus County Fair Parade is Monday at 4 p.m. The fair opens its gates Tuesday and runs through Oct. 16. Gate admission is $8, and half off night will be on Thursday. Carload Sunday will be $40 and includes admission and ride bands. The fairgrounds are located at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.
Enter your baked creations on Monday, Oct. 10 between 8-11 a.m. for the Columbus County Fair Baked Goods Contest for adults and kids of all ages. Items will be judged that afternoon in the quilting room at the Ferguson Building at the fairgrounds.
• Maze Craze at Galloway Farms in Hallsboro will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Nov. 6. This year the 13-acre Outer Banks themed maze will lead you on a treasure hunt as you search for OBX. Outside of the maze, experience games, tractor-pulled wagon rides, barrel train rides, live farm animals, concessions, and more.
A two-acre kid’s fun maze contains story trails. Walk along with your children, and read the story of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, Jack and the Cornstalk, The Three Silly Goats and Their Stuff, and sing with Farmer Alma’s Sing-Along Trail. • Speaking of the Maze Craze, Ms. Santini’s first grade class at Supply Elementary headed out to Galloway Farm on Thursday to check out the Spookley the Square Pumpkin field trip. The kids got to listen to Farmer Alma tell stories, learn about what to do if their being bullied, and play in a spray of dancing bubbles.
• October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Linda Prince of the Lebanon United Methodist Church women’s ministry stopped by the Families First office in Whiteville to present the organization with a check from donations taken up by the ladies. The money will go towards helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
• The Bladen County Sheriff’s Office has a new eye catching vehicle in town. The department has decorated one of the squad cars in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The vehicle will be driven by Corporal Linda Jacobs and will be a permanent addition to the office’s fleet.
• The fourth annual Kevin Connor Memorial Run will be held Saturday, Oct. 15. The trooper (B-551) lost his life during a traffic stop on Oct. 17, 2018. The first run was held on Oct. 19, 2019, and over 900 runners participated. It is so far the largest organized race ever in Columbus County.
During the event, the Foundation will be holding a high stakes raffle. The tickets are on sale for $100 a piece for a chance to win five different firearms. The drawing will be held at 10:30 a.m. after the run. Contact the foundation via Facebook to purchase one of the 200 available tickets.
• The Lake Waccamaw Cruise for the Cause committee presented the local Vietnam Veterans Association with a check for $450 this week. The money was raised during the annual golf parade fundraiser held over the Memorial Day weekend.
• The Bolton Pine Tree Festival scheduled for Oct. 1 has been moved to Oct. 29. The committee is still looking for food vendors and entertainment for the event. For more information, contact Bolton Town Hall at 910.655.8945.
• The town of Lake Waccamaw is now accepting entries for their annual Christmas Parade. To put in your entry online, visit their or stop by Town Hall located at 205 Flemington.
• It’s going to be a big Christmas season this year in downtown Whiteville. The annual tree lighting ceremony is Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. There will be music, hot cocoa, free carriage rides, a visit from Santa, and much more. Be sure to mark your calendars for this event.
