Last weekend was an exhausting one in our community, as folks turned out to show their appreciation for Veterans. On Monday, both the Veterans Memorial Park and other veterans groups held ceremonies marking the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the official start of the ceasefire ending World War I. Known as Armistice Day, that became Veterans Day.

Angela Norris and the Veterans Memorial Park volunteers took a major step Monday, breaking ground for the veterans outreach center at the park. The 2,000 square foot building will have a welcoming porch with rocking chairs, as well as inside meeting space.

It will eventually host visits by Veterans Affairs staff who will come to Columbus so our veterans don’t have to drive to Fayetteville or Brunswick County for assistance. The building will be finished next year – and then construction of the museum will start.

Angela and her team are truly going above and beyond to help and honor veterans and their families in our community.

While our veterans should be considered heroes every day, our heroes and Good Samaritans are kind of blending together again this week.
