Sheriff Bill Rogers addressed media reports of Henry Zartman’s autopsy report in a video released Thursday evening.
Rogers said the state medical examiner’s use of the term homicide did not mean the ME determined the Myrtle Beach man was murdered.
Zartman was shot multiple times during a gunfight with five deputies in May 2024. They tried to Tase him twice before Zartman began shooting at deputies.
The incident occurred outside a home in Nakina. A woman in the home called 911 to report a domestic disturbance.
The deputies involved were relieved of duty for two weeks while the shooting was investigated.
Rogers explained that homicide is the technical term used to describe death at the hands of another person. The only other terms used in autopsy reports are suicide, accidental and undetermined.
The State Bureau of Investigation has presented the case file on the incident to District Attorney Jon David. He did not return a request for comment.
