CAMDEN — West Columbus saw its season come to an end Friday in a first round 2A playoff loss 33-30 to Camden County.
The Vikings rallied from a 26-14 deficit in the fourth quarter to take a 30-26 lead with just under eight minutes left in the game and the ball deep in Bruins territory, only to fumble and have Camden County score late for the win.
The Vikings offense got on the board in the first quarter with a DJ Graham touchdown pass to cut the Bruins lead to 7-6 after Camden County took the opening drive down the field for a touchdown. Jeffery Best gave the Vikings the lead with a two yard touchdown run. DJ Graham passed to Charlie McLeod in the end zone for the two-point conversion, making the score 14-7 Vikings with 3:01 left on the clock in the second quarter.
The next three minutes and one second were a nightmare for the Vikings. Camden County scored on its next possession and proceeded to take the lead 16-14 on a safety. West Columbus kicked a free kick to the Bruins do to the safety, which Camden County returned for a touchdown, giving the Bruins a 23-14 advantage at the half.
Camden County added a 25-yard field goal from Elijah Thurston to push the lead to 26-14 with just under three minutes to go in the third quarter. West Columbus started their rally in the beginning of the fourth quarter as Jaceon Kell hit Santonio Vereen with a touchdown pass to make it 26-22 with the DJ Graham two-point conversion. DJ Graham rushed it in from two yards out with under eight minutes on the clock to push the lead to 30-26. Charlie McLeod threw to Vereen for the two-point conversion.
West Columbus could not hold the Bruins out of the end zone for the remainder of the game. Thurston kicked the PAT to make the final score 33-30 Camden County.DJ Graham had another outstanding game for the Vikings.
Graham connected on 13 of 20 his passes for two touchdowns and 187 pards. He also added 87 yards on the ground on 12 carries. The Vikings finish their season at 3-8. The Bruins record goes to 4-7. Camden County has the pleasure of playing at eight times State Champions Tarboro (10-0) on Friday.
The Tarboro Vikings have won 20 in a row to go with their eight straight championships.
