• Male suspect is awaiting charges for 2020 abuse of infant.
The mother of a child has been charged with allowing her daughter to be raped by the mother’s boyfriend.
Mary Angie Barnhill, 39, and Parker Spaulding, 29, are being held under secured bonds. Barnhill is alleged to have allowed Spaulding to perform sex acts on her daughter from the time she was 12 until she was 15, according to warrants.
Spaulding is charged with multiple counts of statutory rape of a child under 15, indecent liberties with a minor, second degree forcible rape of a child, and sex acts by a substitute parent, according to warrants and jail records.
The sexual abuse began in 2022, according to the warrant.
Spaulding’s address was listed on court documents as 5642 Sam Potts Hwy., Hallsboro. He is being held without bond on eight charges of statutory rape and statutory sex offense of a child under 15, three counts of indecent liberties, second degree forcible sex offense, second degree forcible rape, and sex acts by a substitute parent or guardian.
Spaulding was out on bond awaiting trial for the 2020 abuse of an infant.
In that case, the 14-month-old was admitted to Columbus Regional on March 9, 2020 suffering from “major trauma,” according to a release from the sheriff’s office at the time. The child was transferred to Novant New Hanover with critical injuries.
The report said both of the child’s arms and legs were broken, the child sustained extensive bruising about the body and extreme head trauma, resulting in extensive brain injuries. The child was flown to UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill. At Chapel Hill, the child underwent multiple surgeries in an attempt to save her life.
During the investigation, CCSO and DSS conducted interviews with every member of the household. CCSO Criminal Investigation Division executed two search warrants at 5640 Sam Potts Highway and 5642 Sam Potts Highway in Hallsboro.
Evidence indicated that Jeanne Spaulding; Kayla Michelle Evers; and Spaulding were in the residence and responsible for the care/supervision of the child, at the time of her injuries.
In October, Evers was sentenced to 25 to 42 months in prison on a plea deal. Jeanne Spaulding is also still awaiting trial.
“These individuals willfully committed and/or grossly, negligently omitted acts resulting in the extensive trauma to the 14 month old child, by applying extreme physical pressure to the child’s body,” the release said.
Note: Barnhill’s address was not shared in an effort to protect the identity of the victim.
