Citizen Hauls Suspect Out of Stolen Police Vehicle

A Pembroke man is now in custody after he allegedly stole a Bladenboro Police truck Monday, only to be yanked out of second vehicle by a private citizen Tuesday.

Katrale Sampson, 32, of Pembroke is being held under no bond, according to the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. He is charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, larceny by employee, and resisting a public officer by the Bladen sheriff’s office. Bladenboro Police charged Sampson with assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon, larceny of a motor vehicle,  possession of heroin, resisting an officer, felony larceny, and other charges, the BCSO said.

Sampson was stopped by Bladenboro Police Officer Shane Todd on Center Road Monday around 5:42 p.m., the BCSO said, and Sampson managed to steal the officer’s truck and flee the area. The vehicle was later found on Marsh Road near the Robeson County line.

Deputies patrolled the area throughout the night, and used drones to search for Sampson, but did not locate him.

Around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, a 911 caller reported a vehicle had been stolen on Hester Mill Road. Minutes later, BCSO said, an ”anonymous caller” reported following the stolen vehicle to the Champs gas station near Bladen Community college.

The caller said he had dragged the suspect from the vehicle at the station, and Sampson fled the area on foot toward the college.

“Bladen County Dispatchers immediately made contact with Bladen Community College, West Bladen High School, Dublin Primary, Homestead School and Dublin First Baptist to initiate a lockdown. A perimeter was quickly executed by Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies began canvasing the area,” BCSO reported.

Residents spotted Sampson, and deputies tracked him through a wooded area behind BCC. He was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m. on N.C. 410 near Dublin.

No injuries were reported.
