Deadly Train Wreck is Society Topic

A disastrous train wreck that could have been avoided will be the topic of the next meeting of the Southeastern North Carolina Genealogical Society.

Joanna Phillips will detail the Dec. 16, 1943 crash of a train in Robeson County. The wreck killed 74 people. Phillips has researched the victims and some of the survivors, and will discuss the circumstances leading up to one of the worst rail crashes in state history.

The society will meet March 14 at 2 p.m. at Whiteville Missionary alliance Church, 623 Warrior Trail, Whiteville. The public is welcome. Some members typically arrive early to share family history.
