This weekend is Memorial Day weekend, and there are tons of things planned throughout the rest of May. Check out a gun safety workshop, donate blankets and supplies to two important centers in Whiteville, and while you’re at it, head out to the Farmers Market for the Food Truck Rodeo. Columbus County has plenty to keep you busy.

Lower Cape Fear LifeCare’s Angel House in Whiteville needs donations for their Family Kitchen at the facility. These items allow for families staying with loved ones to be able to have snacks and meals during their visit.  

The list includes: 

Canned sodas- especially Coke, Pepsi, Mountain Dew, and Sun Drop 

Bottled Water 

Individual bags of chips 

Lance crackers 

K-cups for Keurig coffee maker 

Coffee creamer 

Foam plates 

Paper towels 

Plastic spoons and forks

The Veterans Memorial Park of America will be holding their Memorial Day ceremony and annual veterans luncheon on May 22 at 11 a.m. The meal is free to vets, but those who would like to attend must preregister by May 15.  

To reserve your place in line, call Angela Norris at 910.840.3848 or Randy Norris at 910.840.5207. The park is located at 6357 James B. White Highway South in Whiteville. 

The Sheepdog Foundation and the Columbus County Health Department will partner together to host the Firearm Safety Workshop this Friday, May 22, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for the community at no cost. The program provides citizens with a foundation for responsible fun ownership.  

The goal is to reduce life-threatening accidents and teach essential legal and technical skills. The workshop features structured education, hands-on training, and a universal safety principle to ensure firearms and ammunition are handled and stored safely.

Carolyn’s Kaleidoscope Child Advocacy Center is in need of new blankets for medical exams for children ages newborn to 18 years old. Bright colors, fun patterns, character blankets, and fuzzy throws that are kid-friendly help make medical exams feel less scary.  

Those who would like to ship or drop off donations to the center can do so at 219 North Lee Street in Whiteville. The blankets will be distributed in Columbus, Bladen, Robeson, and surrounding counties.  

Roots of Resilience: Tribal Women Rising will be on May 23 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Women and girls of all ages are welcome to attend, and lunch will be provided at the event.  

Incontinence supplies, bed pads, baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, women’s resource information, and food vouchers will be handed out to those in need. There will be craft vendors on site, and Columbus Regional Healthcare Systems and the Columbus County Health Department will be in attendance. 

Alicia Freeman will lead the Talking Circle, and prizes will be handed out at the resilience gathering. The address posted for the event is 7239 Old Lake Road in Bolton. 

Landyn Jacobs (Facebook)

Riegelwood Dixie Youth Baseball recognized the Landyn Jacobs Scholarship winners. The scholarship was established to honor the late son of Lake Waccamaw Mayor Greg Jacobs and wife Heather.  Landyn loved baseball and cherished the ballfield and the memories made there.  

Gauge Simmons, Devon Jenrette, Adrion Jenrette, Brennen Little, and Mack Freeman were each awarded $500 in support of their continued education and will carry on Landyn’s legacy.  

The Columbus County Community Farmers Market has new hours of operation. The facility will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3-7 p.m. and every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Come shop fresh and local and support vendors and farmers in our community.  

The market has fresh produce, farm-fresh eggs, homemade breads, jams and jellies, local honey, fresh juices, handmade jewelry, custom tumblers, crafts, games for all ages, live music, and so much more. A food truck rodeo is scheduled for May 23, and the facility will have a Skate Night on June 6 from 5-7 p.m. The market is located at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville. 

Lakeside worship services will begin Memorial Day Sunday and will run every weekend through Labor Day Sunday starting on May 24. The services are held at 9 a.m. at the Lake Waccamaw Sailing Club. Located at 3100 Canal Cove Road.  

Lake Waccamaw Methodist Church will have Pentecost Sunday service on May 24 beginning at 10 a.m. This very special worship service will be followed by a covered dish lunch. Bring your favorite dish to share and celebrate with LWMC at 506 Lake Shore Drive.  

Transformation Church and Milk B4 Meat Ministries and friends will have a three-day sidewalk revival on May 28-30 at 6:30 p.m. each evening in the Walmart parking lot in Whiteville. A candlelight vigil will be held on May 29 for Pastor Heath Conner as he was supposed to be the speaker that evening and unexpectedly passed away.  

Pastor Buddy Seay of Beaverdam OFWB Church will preach on May 28, the vigil will be led by Pastor Jon Walton of Transformation Church on May 29, and on May 30, Evangelist Lynn Lowery will bring the word.  

Iron Hill Baptist Church will be having a fish fry fundraiser on May 29 from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Plates are $10 each and will include a catfish fillet, sweet potatoes, homemade cole slaw, bread, and a dessert.

All Columbus, Bladen, and Brunswick County pastors are invited to the Pastor’s Prayer Breakfast on May 30 at 8 a.m. at Chadbourn Holiness Church for the Encounter Crusade. The meal will be free of charge and crucial information for the crusade will be handed out to you and your churches. 

Matthew Ward will be the guest speaker, and everyone is encouraged to invite your pastor friends. CHC can be found at 518 North Elm Street in Chadbourn.  

The Columbus County Disaster Coalition will be hosting the Columbus County Preparedness Expo on May 30 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the fairgrounds. The event is focused on the public meeting community partners active in disasters.  

There will be free food until supplies last, door prizes, Touch-A-Truck, and other fun activities. Come out and learn how to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season. The fairgrounds can be found at 886 Prison Camp Road in Whiteville.  

The We Care Ministry in Clarkton has announced their new dates and time for their community food distribution. The next distribution day will be June 2. The event is a first come, first serve drive thru service only, and you are asked to please remain in your vehicle. Everyone is welcome.  

Each food bank will be held at 2 p.m. at the Pierce Chapel Community Building located at 595 Porterville School Road in Clarkton. For questions, call 910.508.6352 or 910.998.2856. 

Fair Bluff will have their First Saturday Market on June 6 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Come out and enjoy the Riverwalk and do some shopping with vendors, yard sellers, and artisans at Riverside Drive. While you’re in town, be sure to stop by Main Street for ‘Art in the Park’ across from the Lumber River Visitors Center.  

Any and all beautiful artwork from drawings, paintings, wooden items, crafts, needlepoint, and handmade jewelry will be up for grabs. To participate in selling your pieces, be sure to comment under the post on the Fair Bluff Chamber of Commerce Facebook Page. Entry is free to both events.  

Living Hope Pregnancy Support Services will have a Meal Prep and Infant Nutrition class on June 11 at 1 p.m. at the center. Attendees will receive a free strap-in highchair for child ages 6 months and up.
