HOLLY SPRINGS—Neither rain nor lightning could stop Whiteville as the Wolfpack fought through an hour-long rain delay to defeat East Rutherford 4-1 in Game One of the best of three championship series in Holly Springs Wednesday night.
The win put the Pack just one victory away from claiming its 10th state baseball title in school history, unless East Rutherfordton rallies this afternoon. If the Cavaliers make a comeback in the day’s game, the series and the championship will be decided in an 8 p.m. game tonight.
Freshman pitcher Luke McLean threw a gem for Whiteville, scattering four hits with nine strikeouts and only one earned run in a complete game effort.
Wyatt Torelli, Jayden Todd, and Ty’Lae Rose each had a hit and an RBI for the Wolfpack. Senior Malachi Dato went five innings and struck out five in the loss for the Cavaliers.
Whiteville goes to 20-7 on the year with the victory. East Rutherford, the 2025 2A State Champions, fall to 24-6. Game Two is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Main Athletic Park in Holly Springs.
If a loss forces a Game Three, that will be played tonight at 8 p.m. at the Main Athletic Park in Holly Springs.
