Possible Drowning Reported in Nakina

One person was airlifted after a water rescue near Nakina Wednesday.

Nakina Fire and Rescue said in a social media post that the department was called to the 2100 block of River Road around 8 p.m. Nakina and Tabor City responded to the call.

Units were en route when they were informed that the person was an “elderly patient” who was found floating face down in the Waccamaw River. Bystanders were performing CPR on the man when rescue units arrived.

Responders took over, the post said, but the patient remained unresponsive.

Air transport was called, and NFR set up a landing zone in the 16000 block of Seven Creeks Highway. The patient was transported to an area hospital.

NFR thanked Columbus County 911, Tabor City, and the bystanders who stepped up to help, as well as residents who allowed their property to be used for a landing zone.

The victim’s condition was not immediately available.
