Forest Service crews and local fire departments continue to deal with wildfires across the region, including a massive fire in Brunswick County.
The Quarry Road fire near Shallotte began Friday and has destroyed two buildings and hundreds of acres of woodland, according to the NCFS. The fire was mapped at 283 acres, with about 80 percent containment today (July 13). A number of homes were evacuated and roads were closed Friday and Saturday, but Brunswick County Emergency Services said all evacuation orders were lifted by Sunday.
Heavy smoke is still present in much of the area, and motorists are advised to keep an eye out for firefighting equipment. The area is still considered a “No-drone zone” while the fire is being fought. Private drones can force firefighting apparatus to be grounded. It is against state law to fly a drone over an active wildfire.
Units from Columbus County joined fire crews from Horry, Pender, New Hanover and elsewhere to assist with the Quarry Road fire. Old Dock Baptist Association donated a trailer of food and drinks to firefighters.
A fire on Happy Home Road in Columbus required NCFS and local departments Saturday. That fire is completely contained.
A large fire is burning in the Kelly community of Bladen County as well. That fire has consumed 89 acres near the Whitehall Plantation Gamelands and is threatening a blueberry farm off Overlyon Road.
Beneficial rains Saturday evening and Sunday helped slow some of the spread of the fire. Despite the badly needed rain, a number of fires are still being monitored throughout the region. No burn bans have been issued, but officials advise extreme caution and encourage that all burning be delayed for the time being.
