Three Charged, Two Sought in Shootout

Three suspects have now been charged in a shootout Friday on Whiteville’s west side, and two are still wanted by police.

Arthur Jackson, 19; Shatisha Janice Jackson, 43; and Shyreak William Benton, 34, face multiple charges in the incident. Dale Freeman and Zyon are wanted in the case.

Whiteville Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said police were called to West Ward Street Friday around 7 p.m. Friday to a report of shots being fired in the area. Officers determined that “multiple shots” had been fired between individuals at Belton’s home and others in Jackson’s car.  Jackson sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound and was taken to Columbus Regional via private vehicle before police arrived.

Area residents reported hearing multiple gunshots before a large police presence descended on the area.

Warrants show that Jackson, Willis, Freeman and Belton allegedly engaged in a gunfight using a “brown pistol” and an AR-15 pattern handgun just before 7 p.m. Multiple rounds were fired into Belton’s home. Belton returned fire, striking Jackson’s vehicle and Dale Jackson.

Shatisha Jackson was with Jackson, Willis and Freeman in Dale Jackson’s Chevrolet Equinox during the shooting, according to warrants. She is alleged to have conspired with Freeman, Zyon Willis and Dale Jackson to “commit the felony of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill” Belton, according to her warrant. Her address was listed as 206 W. Nance St., Whiteville. She was held without bond.

Belton, 34, of 429 Ward Street, was held without bond on a single count of firing into an occupied vehicle, according to warrants and detention center reports. He has a criminal history stretching back to 2007, with charges including possession of a stolen firearm, resisting an officer and drug possession.

Arthur Dale Jackson, 19, of 106 City Dr., is also held without bond, on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging a firearm in the city limits, firing into an occupied dwelling, and possession of a handgun by a minor.

Willis and Freeman are wanted on charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, discharging into an occupied dwelling, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Anyone with information about either suspect is asked to call 911 or make an anonymous tuip to the WPD.
