West Columbus and South Columbus are mourning the loss of local high school coach Brandon Smith. Smith was a standout football player at South Columbus and most recently a longtime assistant of West Columbus football team.
Smith also played football for Guilford College after graduating from South Columbus. He was a popular figure in Columbus County and is being remembered for being a family man, his kindness to others, and his ability to lead and motivate his players on the field.
Whether on the training field, the weight room or after a winning game, Smith was known for his catchphrase, “The hay is in the barn.”
His family recently opened a restaurant, Nell’s Chop Shop and Catering, that is a staple in the city of Chadbourn.
Smith also worked at Food Lion. Former co-worker Heather Autumn Hensley said in a social media post that Smith will be missed.
“He was always a gentleman and a good guy. He was the kind of guy that walked all of us women to our cars when we had to close because our parking lot was so dark.”
Smith’s friendly nature was evident whether he was at work or on the football field. He was known for telling customers at Nell’s that “You are family and I want you to feel like family when you enter.” He carried that same passion and love to his players at West Columbus. The family asked for prayers.
