Whiteville Police have charged a woman with misdemeanor assault on a child after a July 1 incident. Warrants show Jennifer Ashley McKay, 39, of 209 Oliver St., Whiteville, was arrested on a single charge of misdemeanor assault. Jail records show she was released on a $2,500 secured bond. McKay is alleged to have grabbed an eight-year-old by the hair and repeatedly struck the child in the face.

Damages were estimated at $150,000 after fire swept through a home on Sandhole Road Tuesday. Acme-Delco-Riegelwood Fire and Rescue Chief Steve Camlin said firefighters were called to the home at 906 Sandhole Road to a kitchen fire Tuesday morning.
