A teenager has been charged with the stabbing death of a Rico Road man last week.

David Len Ward, 30, was brought to Columbus Regional around 3 a.m. on July 10, according to the sheriff’s office. He was dead on arrival, having sustained multiple stab wounds.

Columbus County 911 received a call a short time later from a 17-year-old male who advised that “he had stabbed someone,” according to a press release from the CCSO. Deputies and Lake Waccamaw Police made contact with the youth near the victim’s home in the 1300 block of Rico Road. The teen was taken into custody, questioned and is being detained at the New Hanover County juvenile facility.

When detectives searched the residence, the release said, they found evidence of an altercation. Additional evidence was seized from the Chevrolet Tahoe that transported the victim to the hospital.

The killing was the ninth this year. The last homicide occurred April 28, when William Jacob Singletary allegedly killed Monalisa Williams and pushed her from a moving car in Williams Township.

This is an ongoing investigation, according to the CCSO. A motive in the slaying has not been released.
